    You want to protect hot metal using the inert gas for as long as you can reasonably do so. That is why you should point the torch at where you have been rather than where you are going. Well that’s what I’ve always thought after watching others weld. Nice to see the idea bear out. I think the reason for the “e” is that you want to melt the metal in the region of the outer e shape but that creates a dimple in the centre of the bead so you drive through with the middle line of the e to fill that. 🤷 Those welds look awesome!

    I’ve been welding for almost 20 years and have always been told not to do any motion when mig welding because short circuit transfer already has poor penetration. The welds look nice but not something I would do when welding something I want holding anything on a car or truck.

    When we have the car body mounted in the BBQ rack, it's time to reinforce the cabin, floor, doors, pillars, panels, fenders and hardtop to today's safety standards. After all metal work is reinforced to protect the driver and passengers in a crash or rollover (the crash cannot penetrate the cabin), we continue the rest of body/ chassis reassembly. Two mechanical custom changes will improve the safety: 1. Substitute the straight steering column with a modern crash absorbing steering system. 2. Install modern disc power brakes on all four wheels. 3. Finishing touch: install seat belts and air bags. Result: Five star safety equipped classic with tougher structure and durability. New classic car show category: Safety Customized classic. It will be more expensive but the superior classic will be safely driven for thousands of extra miles. Thanks

    I like the HF tig gloves for most welding. If I get into "production" where things get hot I have thick gloves. Most the time.. I don't have the convenience of clean metal or simple positions. And the need to just get it done. So choose a setting and go at it.

    Raising lows by on-dolly slapping/hammering works great, but I can't explain why! It's counterintuitive that hammering or slapping on-dolly in a low area would raise the low area. I say this because the low area is stretched as the result of some accident, and hammer/slapper on-dolly only stretches it further! I'd think that we'd end up with more stretching after the on-dolly work? Perhaps that is exactly what happens, which is why we follow up by shrinking with the shrinking disk?

    • @SYLVESTERSCUSTOMS
      @SYLVESTERSCUSTOMS День назад

      You are definitely thinking of it correctly. It is already stretched hence why it is low. But you have to stretch it upward. The reason that it’s coming up is because it is taking the shape of the lower crown on the dolly for example, if you had a hammer that had more crown than the dolly you were using, it would go the wrong direction. The best way to think about it is you have to balloon it slightly upward so that way you can get to the point to shrink it. With that being said if you have an area that is low and stretched to begin with, if you had back access, you could shrink the backside and create the best result

    • @MikeSchweitzer
      @MikeSchweitzer День назад

      @@SYLVESTERSCUSTOMS Okay, now I understand. It's the same as taking a dolly and driving a dent out from below, which creates a bulge above the proper contour that we then shrink. Your comment about "creating a potato chip" by using a shrinking disk on both sides of a panel has me cautious, as I do have complete access to the backside. I'm doing the last 5% of this job (restoring a low crown 1970 GM hood with the inner brace removed), which of course takes 95% of the time, so all the lows are very minor and seem tailor made for the shrinking disk. They're probably too subtle for torch shrinking. Thank you so much for your comments, and of course these videos.

    Overhead welding you need to increase wire speed to push the puddle up so it doesn't fall down into the tip. For anyone who wants to get better. Get a stick of 1½" or larger angle iron. Say, a foot or two long. Set it up so it's in the "V" position. Then spend hours running beads. 1st bead in the groove. Then a bead on either side, and so on and so forth. Run a bead the entire length, don't stop. Don't get caught up in having to weld pieces of metal together. Learn how to run consistent beads. Play with different torch patterns. Play with the heat and wire speed as you fill the valley up. Take notice to how it sounds and what the profile of your weld bead looks like. When you can fill up multiple sticks of angle iron with consistent beads. You can weld. As a Freshman in H.S. I spent hours welding scrap metal together. Similar fashion as I describe above. Filling gaps, valleys, whatever. we'd weld scrap together until it was 6ft tall lol. Besides the normal shop class work, I did this over 4 years and by the time I attended WyoTech. Was already a really good welder. I just had to adapt to sheetmetal. Learn on thick stuff because then it's just a matter of turning the settings down. If you can't lay good welds on thick metal, you shouldn't be welding sheetmetal. It's going to be a frustrating time.

    • @ChasingPerfection
      @ChasingPerfection 3 дня назад

      IMO, 20yrs of MIG welding. The profile of the weld bead tells you everything you need to know for adjusting settings. I don't like a mounded inside fillet weld. Tells me there is either too much wire speed or not enough amperage. Adjusting either can get you the weld you want, based on desired travel speed.
